As you might suspect, the theory of who Rey’s parents are is something that many people are still in an uproar about since the big reveal in The Last Jedi was something less than pleasing. But if we’re being honest, the theory that B. Alan Orange of MovieWeb has disclosed is even less so since it would indicate that Sheev Palpatine is, as we’ve known for a long time, a very disturbed individual. Not only does this theory go back to indicate that Palpatine impregnated Anakin’s mother through the use of, sigh, midi-chlorians, but it also indicates that he did the same thing to a random junk trader, who was actually Rey’s mother. The reason why this doesn’t add up is the whole random aspect, though one could say that there’s a precognitive feeling to it that would even things out just a bit, meaning that Palpatine sensed just who he would need and who was strongest with the spark that would eventually give birth to a powerful Force user. It’s certainly better than the idea that Han Solo fathered a child with a Force-sensitive, though this would explain how she’s already a pretty decent pilot.
Right now the tangled mess of Rey’s parentage is just about as convoluted as it was between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, with an even bigger knot in the middle of it all to unravel it would seem. Some might claim that it’s not that bad, that it’s easy to see if one just looks. But while some quibble over just what role Palpatine will play in Rey’s life writers like Matt Miller from Esquire actually try to make sense of it by stating that Palpatine did create the Contingency, a failsafe that would eliminate the Empire in his absence and carry on with his plans once he was gone. It could be that Snoke was carrying out his orders, and once Kylo Ren came into his true power he took over, killing his master as is the way of the Sith and establishing control. That however would beg the question of what’s going to happen now since the Knights of Ren are supposed to be coming back in The Rise of Skywalker. Is one of them bound to take on Kylo for the top spot? Or is Kylo going to join Palpatine and complete the Rule of Two once again? It’s already been established that he’s willing to sacrifice those in his life that should mean a great deal, so the Knights shouldn’t be much of an impediment if the Emperor, however he managed to survive, demands this of him.
There are going to be a lot of theories that will be brought forth from here to December and a lot of them are going to have something to do with Rey and her parentage since it’s been obvious since The Force Awakens that she’s got something inside her that allows for the improbable skill and connection she has when it comes to the Force. Think about it, she picked up a lightsaber and dueled with Kylo in the first movie without any prior training, and in The Last Jedi she took on a squad of highly-trained guards alongside Kylo after what might have been considered to be not even minimal training from Luke. She’s a naturally-gifted Force-user and is adept with a lightsaber, something that many people within the Star Wars universe could never claim in the same breath. Even the most legendary Jedi had to learn and perfect their combat skills over time, though it does seem fair to say that a lot of them would give Rey a run for her money or obliterate her at this point if they were to meet in their prime.
But back to Palpatine being Rey’s father. Not only is this kind of creepy, as it would mean that she’s technically Luke’s aunt, but it’s also hard to swallow since it would mean that somehow, some way, Palpatine found a woman that would give birth to Rey and impregnated her through the use of the Force in a manner that almost sounds like rape. This is a harsh word to use, but given that one of the definitions of this word is ‘outrageous violation’ it kind of fits. You can even see how this would work as Jake Kleinman of Inverse has shown us that as a Force ghost (yes, Sith can become Force ghosts as well despite the rumors) Palpatine is in fact capable of creating life. Given that he seems to be alive, or at least still connected to the material plane in some way as the trailer would suggest, this means that his power is still very potent and as a result could allow him to do even more without the added frailty of a human body. But we’re going to have to wait and see, and until then, the rumors are going to keep piling up. Let’s just say it seems improbable at this point since quite honestly if Rey was created by a Sith it seems more likely that she’d be prone to use the Force in a much different way.
