The Good Doctor has been one of the most popular medical dramas that has been seen on our screens in recent years. The show stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a gifted surgical resident who is an autistic savant. The second season is currently airing and Highmore has directed one of these episodes in this season. The upcoming episode Risk and Reward also marks the first time Daniel Dae Kim will be seen in front of the camera. The actor has been the executive producer of the show since it started and will be playing Dr. Jackson Han. Despite the two actors getting on do well in real life the same cannot be said for their characters. Dr. Han is not fully supportive of Shaun’s role at the hospital and is concerned that he will be viewed more as a liability rather than an asset.
This is the first time that Highmore has directed an episode of the show and he has said that he was grateful for the support that his co-stars gave him as he made his directorial debut. He has also said that he would love the opportunity to direct more episodes in the future. The fact that the team have been working so closely together for the past two years means it feels almost like a family. Even though he is the one being named as director, it definitely feels like a team effort to him.
The possibility of directing another episode is something that he may have chance to do as it has recently been confirmed that the show will be renewed for a third season. The announcement came before season two had ended which shows just how popular it is with fans. Highmore has also said that this was very welcome news among the cast and that they were glad of the opportunity to carry on telling the story of Shaun and the hospital when the new season starts. The nature of the TV industry these days is that no matter how popular a show is, there are no guarantees that it will be renewed until an official announcement has been made.
The chance to direct the episode in which Dae Kim’s character makes his first appearance made the experience even more special for Highmore. Daniel Dae Kim has played such an integral part in the show behind the scenes but obviously fans do not get to see all of this hard work for themselves. Now he has the chance to get a little bit of recognition and Freddie was grateful to get the chance to help with this in some way.
Fans have already been speculating about what the future may hold for Shaun in the rest of the second season and into season three. There is hope among almost everyone that watches the show that a relationship will develop between Shaun and Lea. However, at the moment she has a boyfriend and so any potential relationship is not going to happen while she is still seeing him. Highmore has hinted that there will be developments in this storyline before season two comes to an end.
There is also a lot of scope to explore how the introduction of Dr. Han will affect Shaun’s role at the hospital. This is a complete unknown at the moment because nothing much is known about Dr. Han and what his motives are. There has been the suggestion that he will feel negatively towards Shaun but this could go either way. He may not be prepared to give Shaun much of a chance or Shaun could win him over like he has with many other of his colleagues.
Freddie Highmore has come a long way since his role as Charlie Bucket in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. He has shown time and time again what a good actor he is in The Good Doctor and other shows such as Bates Motel. He is also listed as a producer of The Good Doctor. If the episode he has directed is well received then he may soon be able to add director to his list of talents and fans of the show are excited to see where his career will take him in the future.
