Harold Lloyd Jenkins, better known as Conway Twitty, was a big star in his time and someone that, like many of his generation, served in the armed forces for part of his life when he was drafted to do so. Throughout his life however he was always partial to music and despite his proclivity for country music he was also into a few other genres as well. The one thing about Conway Twitty is that despite the fact that he won many awards and was even inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a lot of what he’s done has gone by the wayside and been either forgotten or placed so far in the back of country music’s history that a lot of people don’t know that much about him. He did a lot to contribute to the genre and to the music industry as a whole, and as of now about 1 in 10 people might know about him.
Here are a few of his songs as featured in movies and TV.
5. The Family Guy – I See the Want To in Your Eyes
This is one way that anyone might know who Conway Twitty is since he’s been used so many times as a cutaway during the Family Guy show. It might seem like a great homage and a way to remember him but in some ways it almost seems as though his fame is being used as kind of a comedic footnote that’s not entirely complimentary. Of course if you really want to look at it in a positive light it could be that Seth MacFarlane really did like Conway Twitty or at least listened to him when he was younger and decided that he needed him in the show. Or maybe someone did at any rate.
4. Conway Twitty – I Can’t Believe She Gives it All to Me
Finding clips that show Conway’s contributions to shows like Breaking Bad is pretty tough, but the title of the song does seem to sum up the relationship between Walt and his wife during the show. After all she gave him two kids, a comfortable home and everything she had as a wife and somehow Walt managed to screw it all up. Of course she had her own missteps as well that were caused by either desperation or an urgency to try and accommodate Walt’s growing obsession with keeping his family secure when his time was finally up. All that being said however it was amazing that she stayed with him as long as she did.
3. Conway Twitty – Lonely Blue Boy
Limitless, which is where this song is featured, is the kind of movie you look at and wonder ‘what if?’. The things that are being done with synthetics these days are so profound and so secretive at times that it makes the average person wonder if such a thing could actually be possible. But conceiving of a pill that could keep the brain working at an enhanced capacity seems like a dangerous proposition for just about anyone it would seem since the kind of knowledge that’s being displayed in the film is the type that could be highly beneficial or extremely dangerous depending on who uses them.
2. Punch-Drunk Love – Danny (Lonely Blue Boy)
This is one of the few Adam Sandler movies that probably won’t make anyone laugh, but it’s also a foray into a different kind of movie than Sandler fans would expect. He plays a man that gets little to no respect save from the woman he’s falling in love with, and ends up somehow in a fight over money with a thug that runs a phone sex operation. It’s kind of an odd movie that didn’t really grab a lot of attention at the box office for good reason but has managed to gain some attention throughout the years since its release since it has become something of an oddity that people are at least willing to look at.
1. The Dick Clark Beech – Nut Show-It’s Only Make Believe
Yes that is Dick Clark in the beginning of the clip and yes, it was really called the Beech-Nut show. The one great thing about this besides the music is that the showmanship back in the day was a little different as you see the performer making his way inwards, through the entrance, then through the lobby, and then down the aisle as he makes his way to the stage. That’s the kind of entrance that still wows the audience but doesn’t get seen as much anymore. Showmanship now is a completely different thing that relies on more than just simple motion and talent, but it is a sign of the times as you might expect.
It’s nice to recognize those that came before the legends and stars that we can recall from the more recent years, especially since their contributions helped to inspire so many others.
