It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia 6.08 “The Gang Gets a New Member” Review

When I saw that Charlie Day and SNL cast member Jason Sudeikis were cast alongside each other in the film Going the Distance, I thought, “Eh, I’ll probably wait for the DVD.”

This week’s Sunny was nice because the two shared the screen in something that wasn’t vomited out by the romantic comedy factory.

Sudeikis guest starred this week as Schmitty, a former friend of the gang. Dennis, Charlie and Mac decide to reconnect with Schmitty after seeing his photo in their time capsule. Charlie quickly realizes just how much he hates being around Schmitty, and leaves the gang. Dee, upon reading a truly pathetic letter to her future self, decides to reconnect with her high school drama teacher and helps him teach his class.

The writers and producers of Sunny continued their experimentation with their formula this week, to mostly good results. Normally, the episode would end with the gang together after wronging someone else. This week, the gang has been splintered in some sort of cliffhanger. It was jarring to have this happen all of a sudden after five seasons, but it’s something that fits in with the more episodic vibe the show has had this past season.

Season five saw the mention of a game that Charlie and Frank play at night in their apartment. Night Crawlers. This week, Schmitty mentions how Charlie would always try to get him to play and offers Frank some advice on how to make it better. Learning just a little more about what a game of Night Crawlers entails was by far the best moment of the episode. The mental image of Charlie and Frank writhing about on the floor, this time with blankets as “dirt,” is one that won’t go away easily.

Next week’s episode will undoubtedly pick up where this week’s left off. As Glenn Howerton (Dennis) tweeted earlier, it will lead to the gang’s homemade Lethal Weapon 5 movie Hopefully Dave Foley will also return as the high school principal, too. Set your DVRs!
