The Nintendo Gamecube is quite different from just about everything else they have going. For starters, it’s a lot smaller than most of the other gaming systems out there. That means that it takes up a lot less space but it also means that it isn’t really compatible with any other type of gaming system. In other words, you have to buy the games specifically for this system because you can’t interchange them with anything else. That had a lot of people scratching their heads, but what the Gamecube lacks in versatility, it makes up for in quality. This is accomplished through the use of optical disc technology. In short, the games are better when it comes to both video and audio, but if you already have your favorite games for another system, you’ll have to start building your collection all over again.
With that being said, there are some really good games out there that are designed for the Gamecube. Below are five of them. You can consider this a sampling of the all the fun you could potentially have if you had a Gamecube yourself.
1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002)
Who doesn’t love to play anything that’s related to The Legend of Zelda? This might have been merely a game once upon a time, but today it has practically taken on a life of its own. There are all sorts of games you can play that piggyback off of the original. This is just one of them. Rest assured, there is an entire universe out there where you can live out all of your Legend of Zelda fantasies. If you could only have one game for the Gamecube, this just might be the one you should choose.
2. Mario Kart: Double Dash (2003)
This is another one that can take you back to simpler times, all the way back to the birthday for Super Mario Brothers. This game may not be the original, but it certainly contains enough aspects of it to give you goosebumps. If you love playing any of the Super Mario Brothers games, there is absolutely no reason why you won’t like this one. The game itself is fairly simple and straightforward, but it’s also fast-paced and adventurous. All in all, it’s just a lot of fun to play. It’s definitely one of the staples you should have in your collection.
3. Resident Evil 4 (2005)
Although Resident Evil 4 didn’t get the same accolades as some of the earlier versions of this game, it’s nothing to sneeze at, either. If you’re a fan of the series, there is no reason why you won’t enjoy playing this one. If anything, you might enjoy it more, thanks to the improved sound and graphics.
4. Eternal Darkness (2002)
If the name itself doesn’t interest you, you might want to check your pulse and make sure you’re actually still alive. The great thing about this one is that it doesn’t just have a great title with a mediocre game attached to it. Instead, the game is everything you might hope it could be. It’s like being involved in some sort of weird dream state that is part horror flick and part psychological torture. You never know what will happen around the next corner, and just when you think you finally have it all figured out, you start to question your own sanity. This is easily one of the best games available for Gamecube or any other system for that matter.
5. Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (2001)
You had to know that a Star Wars game would end up on this list sooner or later. Considering all the different games that are available on the subject, it’s somewhat surprising that only one made the list, but the competition here is fairly stout. As for the game itself, you can battle the Empire and everything they can possibly throw at you in your quest to save the Rebellion and make sure the forces of good prevail of evil.
6. Beyond Good and Evil (2003)
This is another one that might make you question your sanity just a little. It’s an interesting and sometimes disturbing game that will keep your attention for quite a long time.
7. Skies of Arcadia (2000)
This is one of the more interesting role playing games offered for the system. In it, you can become a pilot in a fantasy world and rule the skies as you see fit.
8. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (2005)
This is another role playing game, but it has military-like precision. In fact, it’s one of the most tactical games offered for the system.
9. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (2004)
This is a wonderful throwback to some of the earliest games Nintendo ever made, and they did an outstanding job creating this one for the Gamecube.
10. TimeSplitters 2 (2002)
This is a shoot first, ask questions later type of game that is capable of transporting you to all sorts of different dimensions. It’s definitely worth taking a look at.
