It’s not too hard to criticize a celebrity of any sort, but seeing as how Amanda Bynes’s career isn’t showing any real flashes of a successful comeback just yet it’s also kind of hard to keep digging and causing any more flak for her to have to ignore. Right now her career is on hiatus largely because she’s in design school, or was, or still is, and isn’t focusing on anything other than getting her life back on track and fixing what she almost ruined in the first place. When she went out on a limb to say that she didn’t love acting anymore and that she’d retired from it though that was as close to a death knell for her career. It’s very possible for actors to fall out of love with their job, but many of them will at least seek to find the joy in it somehow rather than just walking away. With Bynes it was as though white flag had been riding high behind her for a while.
It’s not too often that you see someone implode because they’re not getting the adult, bad girl roles that others their age are getting. In fact very often those same bad girls that people think are nothing but trouble would give anything to have the squeaky-clean image that Bynes had for so long. It almost seems as though her career tanked because she was attempting to prove to everyone that she could in fact be just as bad as the other women that had gotten their way and been as horrible as possible at times. The good girl image she’d been give was something that some women would absolutely love to have. But unfortunately it all has to do with perspective, and hers seemed to be that she was getting passed up for the roles that she really wanted rather than being passed up because she just wasn’t the kind of person that was right for the role.
She had a shot at showing everyone that she could play something other than the good girl when she was cast for Hall Pass. But due to her emotional and mental state, as it was claimed after a breakup with Kid Cudi, she showed up unprepared and hadn’t learned any of her lines. Maybe it’s the perspective of someone that has never been in show business, but a job is still a job. If you show up unprepared the chances are good that you won’t be there for long and those in charge will find someone else that can do the job you’re not ready to do. Bynes has been using mental illness for a while to describe a lot of the things she’s said and done, and while much of it might be attributed to her condition the fact remains that it still looks as though she torpedoed her career simply because she wasn’t getting what she wanted.
Again, speaking as someone not in show business, you don’t come to the job with a negative attitude hoping for a positive result.
