There is a growing trend in which producers are using the force of nostalgia to revive old shows. It seems like everyone is looking for a reboot of something. Not to be left out of the fray, MTV has thrown its reboot hat into the ring by bringing back the Jersey Shore cast in the reboot “Jersey Shore Family Vacation.” Those of you are Jersey Shore fans are probably wondering how the reboot will compare to the original. Despite the huge budget that has been committed to rolling out this reboot, fans of the original may feel shorted.
The obvious difference is that this short reboot is filmed over the course of one month while the stars on a vacation living in a beach house in Miami. One would think that the wide-open party culture in Miami would provide more opportunities for the cast to get into plenty of drama, but while there is no shortage of drama, the chemistry does not appear to be the same.
You have to keep in mind that many of these stars embarked on singular journeys after the show ended, so the connectivity that was obvious during the filming of the original has been disrupted by the variance in growth and perception between the cast. It seems that many of the moments are manufactured.
Something else that is highly conspicuous is the fact that Samantha Giancola, more affectionately known as “Sammi Sweetheart,” will not be on the show. Giancola has indicated that her decision not to join the show is that she is a different place in her life where she is focusing on her relationship (significant other) and her businesses. As I stated earlier, when the show started the cast members were in their early twenties, now they are in their early thirties. Samantha is currently 31. They are simply not the same and to expect the same antics and behavior is not real.
The hope of the producers was to attract an audience that has grown with these stars, the problem is that the type of growth that takes place been 22 and 31 leads to a different mindset that will not necessarily be entertained by childish antics and foolish mistakes. At 31, most people are, like Samantha, focusing on working on their life goals. Even those who still party do so at their leisure.
It appears that the producers of the reboot are sort of caught between the what the original produced and what a reboot should look like. Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of people who love to sit down and binge on episodes in which there are plenty of toxic relationships and foolish mistakes. The television world is burgeoning with reality shows that provide that type of content. At the end of the day, these characters are no longer kids trying to find their way. Some of the cast members have kids now, and others are nurturing serious relationships and protecting brands, so to call this reboot tamed might even be an understatement. Nevertheless, there will be plenty to watch.
