There is no such thing as mercy for Shawn Mendes when it comes to the game of Flinch, as James Corden so eloquently displays on his show. Give Mendes credit though he didn’t flinch so badly that he spilled the martini glass of milk all over the place. It might have wobbled and he obviously flinched but the buildup to the moment was worse than the actual reaction. It was worse knowing it was coming but not when since Corden was just prolonging the moment. Hillary Swank flinched a bit but didn’t spill a drop, while Mendes flinched and came close but still didn’t spill. Corden of course acted like nothing had happened, leading a person to believe that he’d been behind that glass taking shots for a good amount of time leading up to the game.
That might not seem fair since it doesn’t prove that Corden has nerves of steel but more like a trained reaction to what he knows is coming. But still it’s all in good fun since nothing is getting through the glass and it’s a controlled game for the most part. It was also nice to see that Corden is responsible enough to not give a minor an actual drink, even if it was in play. What would have been even more impressive however, if it had been allowed, was to watch all of the contestants try to take a drink while knowing that they were going to be bombarded with fruit. How sloppy could thinks have gotten then? The flinch response in human beings is pretty natural since it’s the attempt to ward off or get away from something that the body perceives as a threat. It could be a loud noise, a harmful substance or a physical threat that’s invading a person’s space, but the reaction is quite often the same in every person.
It’s an attempt to get away from whatever threat is perceived in order to survive or at least remain undamaged in any way. There are those in whom the flinch response is either non-existent or simply very toned down, meaning that they won’t flinch at anything coming at them. In others it might be something that’s been trained out of them and no longer functions the way it’s supposed to. But the flinch response is something that is part of the fight or flight routines that humans have had since the dawn of time. The path of least resistance is flight, of which flinching is a small representation. It’s simply easier to flinch away from something than to counter it head on. In this manner a lot of people seek to move away from a threat rather than accept it without moving aside.
That can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing since flinching is a natural reflex that can save a person in some cases. In others however it’s kind of negative since it can make others perceive them as weak or somehow less capable. In the matter of the game however it’s simply interesting to see their different reactions.
