Frozen on Broadway has been getting mixed reviews despite being given a positive lean overall. It’s enough to expect that a live show might not do quite as well as an animated feature that became the highest grossing film of its kind. After all the kind of effects that go into animation can’t possibly be replicated fully in a live-action production so attempting to judge them in the same manner isn’t all that fair or even balanced. But according to some of the reviews the snow and ice-producing powers that Elsa displays as a girl and as a woman seem less magical and more bargain basement if you go by some of the reviews.
The acting is on point and the singing is even great but the overall effects just kind of failed to dazzle a lot of critics. It can be said that the story was kept much the same and didn’t deviate but the measure of the effects tended to bring the estimation of the play down quite a bit. In truth it doesn’t seem fair to penalize it in the reviews for not being able to do the same thing as a cartoon, but then you should be able to recall plays such as the Lion King and reason that if something like that was able to achieve such noteworthy status then Frozen should have been able to step up to the plate as well. Again judging it by dint of what the animated movie could do versus the live action play could do isn’t all that fair and it shouldn’t really be used as a comparison. But there are such things as the kind of effects that can pop, sizzle, freeze, and wow the audience into thinking that this was indeed a truly special moment in time when Frozen was able to simply overwhelm people once again with how good it could be.
It does make a lot of sense to not compete with the animated version when it comes to the effects but it also feels like more could have been done with budget that seems to have been laid out for the production. Perhaps a little more would have made the reviews slightly less harsh and more apt to be something that could have been more complimentary. That being said however the idea that Frozen would ever be a complete flop anywhere it was shown would be a bit ridiculous since the number of fans that love the movie would likely go see it as a bit of dinner theater if they were really pressed into it. This film has become such a beloved tale to children and adults that it’s bound to get positive reviews no matter how it’s shown and what kind of effects are used. Getting someone to completely trash the film would be difficult since it would take a truly heartless cynic that has no love whatsoever for children’s tales or anything positive when it comes to fairy tales.
They’re out there, but thankfully they’re easy to ignore too.
