Mary Kills People is kind of a creepy show really when you think about it. A doctor’s job is to preserve life, but Mary has a second job, and that’s to help people transition from this life in a manner of speaking. It’s not truly fair to say that she kills people, but she does help them end their own lives. Terminally ill patients that have no hope of recovering and no possible way to look at their lives as anything but a constant reminder that they’re just biding time until the clock runs out tend to think in absolutes a lot more than many other folks sometimes. Mary just happens to be the one they look to in this Lifetime show when they want to check out on their own terms.
But how would that mess with someone who’s primary duty is to preserve life and do no harm?
5. She’s an end of life counselor.
It’s kind of just how it sounds. An end of life counselor or care person is someone that helps the terminally ill and their families to cope with the decisions that need to be made regarding their care. They tend to ask the questions of whether the family would like to continue the care or discontinue the life support of the patient. This raises a lot of ethical concerns that need to be addressed so that all parties involved know what’s going on and are fully informed.
4. She’s a doctor.
Doctor’s are charged with preserving life but even they know that when someone is terminal preservation can cost a great deal in funding as well as emotional damage that is incurred by those that must watch their loved ones wither away. Mary is making things a bit simpler in acquiescing to the wishes of the patients but she is taking a great risk when it comes to helping the patients end their own lives.
3. In season two things are going to heat up.
The stakes have been effectively raised since the cops have been investigating Mary and her involvement with certain parties has landed her in big trouble. There won’t be any spoilers in this article if you haven’t seen season one or two yet, but right now Mary is in a bit of hot water. Her practice of helping people end their own lives has not gone unnoticed.
2. A lack of control is evident throughout the series.
If there was any control over what she’s doing to begin with it would have come as a surprise since the slippery slope that she began to walk in the first season has only gotten more treacherous as the second season came on full force and without a safety net. She’s treading in dangerous waters and is going to have to be very careful with her every move going forward.
1. She was investigated for her own mother’s death.
It’s safe to say that if she’s being investigated for assisted suicides that those doing the searching would be going through Mary’s life with a fine-toothed comb. What they find of course hasn’t been enough to put her away yet, but that luck is fading quickly.
Mary Kills People is the kind of show that might shake your faith in doctors, at least up until the credits.
