In a twist that some fans might not like Todd Phillips’ origin film Joker is set to portray the clown prince as a failed 80’s comedian. This seems like an odd choice to make for the Joker when it comes to movies and could provoke a lot of people it seems into bashing DC mercilessly yet again when it comes to their decisions on how to make their movies. It wouldn’t be the first time that the Joker was made to be a failed comedian since it happened in The Killing Joke as well, but after the slew of DC films that have been doing far less than expected it would seem as though it might be smarter to do something with one of the most revered characters that’s not so down to earth.
In fact the whole mystique of the Joker might be ruined if it’s figured out that he really is a regular guy that has no real twisted back story since the Joker has become iconic in so many ways to DC that he’s almost like a god despite the fact that he is very human. This has been proven more than once in the comics and in the movies. In fact in the initial Batman movie the Joker was killed off after falling from a clock tower. That too seemed like a strange choice since the Joker and Batman have been going at each other for so long that it seems as though neither is really willing to kill the other for fear of what might be left, or what wouldn’t be. After all Heath Ledger, as the Joker, put it best in The Dark Knight when he said “I think you and I are destined to do this forever”. It was the culmination of the struggle between Batman, who wouldn’t kill the Joker, ever, and the Joker, who wouldn’t kill Batman simply because he was “too much fun”.
But to take the Joker down to grass roots like this seems like such a poor idea that it could end up ruining the character for a lot of people. There have been so many theories as to who the Joker was before he became the clown prince of Gotham that people have thrived on them. They’ve wanted to remain in the dark just so the rumor mills could keep churning out ideas on who the guy is and why he does what he does. He’s pure anarchy, chaos given form, and destroying that would be a sad testament to the fact that Hollywood really has run out of ideas. If they can’t repeat, reboot, or remake, they’re going to rip up, destroy, and kill off anything that was up until this point something that people happened to like just the way it was. If there’s a shake up that needs to happen anywhere it’s within the ranks of the writers who are making the movies that continue to churn out year after year.
Come up with new stuff, but leave certain things alone.
