Frozen Director Might Give Elsa a Girlfriend in the Sequel

When Frozen was released in 2013, it was an instant hit with both children and adults alike. It sparked a huge range of merchandise relating to the characters and the songs from the film became hits in their own right. The computer-animated musical fantasy film was so popular, that there was an instant demand for a sequel to the film. It looks like this sequel is finally in its early stages, but fans could see an unexpected twist. There are serious discussions about whether Elsa will have a girlfriend in the follow-up movie.

The storyline of the first film has been interpreted by some fans as a metaphor Elsa coming out as an LGBTQ person. In the story, Elsa’s parents hide her away because she is different, and she is forced to suppress her emotions. When she decides to ‘let it go’, she feels freer.

Since the film’s release, there has been a campaign pleading with Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in ‘Frozen 2′. They want the subtext of the first film to become more explicit in the sequel. So far, Disney has made no official comment on this campaign.

However, Jenny Lee, the writer and co-director of ‘Frozen 2′ has been more than happy to talk about this issue with The Huffington Post and has said she is open to the idea of Elsa having a female love interest in the next film. In fact, she said it was something that they had a lot of conversations and it was an issue they were conscientious about.

She went to explain that she had yet to make a decision about this as she was unsure whether or not it felt right for Elsa. Lee described her writing style as being very character-led and explained that she always writes from the inside out. She is constantly thinking about what Elsa would be doing in her life, where she would be, and what she would say. She has yet to decide where to go, but it is something she is taking into consideration.

Regardless of the storyline and the relationships she develops, it is likely that moviegoers will be queueing onto the streets when this sequel is released in the movie theaters. That shall certainly be the case if the response to the first movie is any indication of the success that the sequel can expect.

‘Frozen’ was made on a budget of $150 million. In the opening weekend alone, the movie took $110.6 million at the worldwide box office and overall, it took $1.276 billion. This made it the tenth highest-grossing film of all time. Furthermore, it is the highest-grossing animated film ever and the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures release.

Disney officially announced the sequel in 2015, but it is only now that the project is underway. Del Vecho has been confirmed as the returning producer and both Buck and Lee are resuming their roles as directors. ‘Frozen’ fans still have a while to wait yet for the sequel as ‘Frozen 2′ is not set for release until November 27, 2019.
