The Pied Piper gang is coming back yet again to remind us how comical our current start-up culture truly is. Since Silicon Valley started in April of 2014, it’s given us plenty of reasons to laugh about. The show is set to begin its 5th season on March 25, and the new trailer HBO released was vague enough to keep us wanting. However, it did confirm one of the few things we were hoping was not true.
TJ Miller, who played Erlich Bachman in seasons 1 thru 4, was completely M.I.A. in the trailer. There had been suspicions that Miller was fired from the show, but Miller himself confirmed that he had resigned in order to pursue other comedic opportunities. So on to the things that were actually evident in the show.
At the end of season 4, we saw Richard completely hell bent on rendering Hooli obsolete. It seems like we’re going to pick right back up from that in season 5, with Richard still having the same goals and looking like he’s taking the whole team with him, plus 50 other “randos.” Richard, played by Thomas Middleditch, will still be working on the elusive decentralized Internet. Of course, the rest of the team still thinks he’s out of his mind, apart from staffing their company with a bunch of unknowns all at one go. Gilfoyle, as played by Martin Starr, thinks everything that’s going down in the business is all due to Richard’s lack of leadership skills. All the while, Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Dinesh Chugtai in the show, is flipping out about all the dogs that have been let loose in the office. It’s the same silly comedy that’s got us going in the past 4 seasons, and from what we’ve seen in the trailer, it still kind of works.
We see action off the bat when the trailer opens up with Richard waking in the hospital. Also, the growth of the staff can only bring in more chaos–puppies for example. Silicon Valley is promising to still have the same vibe, which is a great things for us fans. The show has profited in the past not only from the awkward, geek-like interactions between the characters, but it’s also gotten much attention from all the actual tech talk and happenings that go on in the show. We see a lot of both in the trailer. It seems as if we’ll be seeing a lot more competition in the show that’s maybe growing a bit more hostile. This might mean that Richard will finally become the CEO that we all know he’s been trying to become.
Tune in to HBO on March 25 to watch Silicon Valley’s 5th season unfold. You’ll have plenty of time to catch up to the first four seasons if you haven’t before. Just make sure to not get so attached to the Bachman character because as you know, he’s not coming back. There’s nothing to worry about, though, because there’s plenty of other things to get attached to with the rest of the awkward yet lovable Pied Piper gang.
