Amazon might be trying to catch up in terms of having one of the most dominant streaming services but The Dangerous Book for Boys looks like an inspired piece of work that could turn into a great series. Unfortunately it’s only going to be six episodes long but it could be something quite special that people will relate to in this day and age since it does take place in the modern era while trying to meld it with the more popular and very nostalgic feelings that are still remembered by those of us that can recall having to use our imaginations to have fun.
Remember those days? When an old cardboard box could be anything you wanted, or building your own boxcar racer took just enough desire and ingenuity along with a few materials to make a reality? Those were the days that our kids don’t always get anymore. It’s not technology’s fault really, it’s that the pace of the world has sped up in such a way that teaching those lessons on how to have fun without being plugged into the web and being forced to stare a screen all day isn’t entirely possible. In this series it’s really not that possible since as a single mother of three boys the female lead has an issue trying to just get them to pay attention, much less put the devices down.
After her husband dies, the mother of the story is left with her three boys and a world of problems to deal with since having kids without your significant other there is a hard process that any single parent could tell you is never a picnic. But getting them to disconnect from the virtual world and reconnect with the world of wonder and imagination that awaits them is another trial altogether. Thankfully her husband left behind a book called The Dangerous Book for Boys in which he’s added a wide variety of different and imaginative games and ideas for the boys to try out and experience. The imaginative and innovative ideas within the book allow the boys to stretch their minds to new limits that they hadn’t thought possible, all while reconnecting with their father in a way as they realize that no matter what, he’ll always be with them in one way or another.
The message sent by this series is bound to be seen as very powerful, especially to single parents that know the struggle of raising children on their own. Life is rarely ever fair and it doesn’t pull any punches when deciding who gets the short end of the stick and who leads a blessed life. The mother in this series is doing the best she can, but without her husband the going is very rough, and the thought that her boys will not grow to remember the lessons he left behind is simply unbearable. So by giving them this book she is allowing them to remember their father and to experience the world in a way that will help them grow into the men that she wants them to be.
