It would appear that America is not the only country that is experiencing a pay gap between men and women. The BBC is making plans to become the best place for women to work and is looking to implement those plans under its Scotland boss, Donalda MacKinnon. The plan will be to lead a review that covers flexible work hours, childcare, and training for women. It will also address the pay gap between men and woman and seek to find a way to help women advance at the same pace as men. The barriers that are currently being found and used to keep women from attaining the same level of success are likely going to be assessed and repealed as much as possible in order to foster true equality in the workplace.
It’s about the same thing that needs to be done and is slowly being worked into the system in America, though perhaps the BBC will figure out a working model that can be used elsewhere to great extent. The work environment needs to be a place where men and women can share ideas and contribute in an equal manner and receive the same benefits as needed for each individual. Whether or not this will be an easy task to accomplish has yet to be fully understood since the status quo tends to put up a good fight while offering to placate those that desire change in ways that are not always appreciated or fully understood.
The workplace is meant to be a level playing field for men and women so long as the work being done is capable of being completed by each individual seeking to contribute. Too often it’s been seen that those who are incapable of performing the said job duties still want equality in terms of available positions, hours, and pay as those who are experienced and have an outstanding track record at their job. Those who can perform the duties required of them should be paid the same wages as those that are performing the same job, though advancement is rarely an equal thing. Speaking as a devil’s advocate at the moment it is necessary to recognize the difference in pay scale and experience, not just the difference between gender that still needs to be noted.
Equality in the workplace is a must, and for both women and men flexible hours, childcare, training, and other basic needs have to be met in order for the workplace to be considered an environment that fosters a fair opportunity for each person involved. This means however that while women deserve and should be encouraged to earn more and match the pay scale of men, they are still going to have to pull their weight actually earn promotions, an equal level of pay, and all the other perks that men have been receiving for so long. If it’s going to be an equal workplace then the rate of pay needs to equalize, not turn to favor women instead of men.
