Five Things You Didn’t Know about Alfonso Cuarón

Alfonso Cuaron is a different kind of director in that he likes to take approaches to filming that are not as widely practiced and are bound to confuse at least a few people. He enjoys different kind of filming techniques that some people find a little off-putting but manage to make his movies come out in manner that is unique and masterful in their own way. He’s been responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed movies in history and is very capable of learning as he goes along.

He has a very interesting outlook on directing.

5. He has an affinity for using handheld cameras.

Alfonso tends to like the unconventional use of certain cameras and the unsteady shots that are given by those devices that aren’t as stationary. This can lead to some very shaky and uncertain shots but depending on the movie it could fairly well. This kind of filming definitely implies hurried and frantic motion at times but it can convey a sense of urgency as well that’s kind of interesting to watch.

4. He directed the third Harry Potter film without having read any of the books.

For not having read the book he did a great job really. The third movie, The Prisoner of Azkaban, was just as loved as the other movies in the franchise, but it seemed a little darker than a few of them as well. Alfonso has a very distinct style that can be shown through his use of lighting and the manner in which he films. But it’s a good guess that a lot of fans didn’t really notice since it was still Harry Potter.

3. He directed Children of Men.

The movie is a rather sad one in which there are no children left in the world, and the youngest man in the world has been killed after having been revered for his youth. The human race is on the brink of extinction as their days continue to wind down. But then a miracle happens, a woman becomes pregnant, and she is seen as the symbol of hope to some and has to be protected so that she can help to bring humanity back from the edge.

2. During his Golden Globe win for Gravity he apologized to Sandra Bullock.

He felt the need to apologize to his star Sandra Bullock since he scared her so badly on the set of Gravity. His heavy accent made it sound as though he said he was going to give her herpes, when in truth he said that he was going to give her and earpiece. That must have been very disconcerting for Bullock, and embarrassing for Cuaron since he was trying to simplify things but was misunderstood.

1. He’s all about the learning process when it comes to movies.

This is one very big reason why he’s considered to be one of the more interesting directors in Hollywood right now. He doesn’t consider each movie as a masterpiece, but more of a lesson that will allow him to get better as he moves onto the next one. There’s no doubt he enjoys his work, but he’s always trying to improve himself and his methods.

That’s the essence of a person that knows they will always be a student if they become the teacher.
