What We Know about the Film “Motherless Brooklyn” so Far

Motherless Brooklyn is a detective movie adapted from a novel that’s currently in pre-production. So far we don’t know much about it other than what’s been given but already it sounds like it might be an interesting film for those that love detective stories and can’t get enough of Edward Norton or Willem Dafoe. As of now there’s no real idea who else will star in the movie but knowing that two big names have already been slated for it is reason enough to think that it might manage to snag at least a couple more notable celebrities to round out the cast.

Edward Norton is still a big enough name to garner a great supporting cast, and Willem Dafoe, even if he didn’t win, was nominated for an Academy award recently, so he should be a great addition.

5. It will directed by and star Edward Norton.

Norton has opted to direct and star in this film as the lead character, which will be interesting to see since unless anyone has seen his directing style as of yet it’s hard to say what it will really be like. His acting is pretty solid aside from a few movies that he shouldn’t have been cast into in the first place, and he should be able to fulfill the role of a detective fairly easily.

4. Willen Dafoe just joined the cast.

This just happened not too long ago as it was announced all over the internet. Since the film’s still in pre-production it might be that he’ll have a chance to slip away due to prior obligations but the hope is that he’ll stick around and put in a solid effort to make this film work. I don’t see him going anywhere to be honest even though he could be in demand right about now.

3. It’s adapted from a Jonathan Lethem novel.

Like any novel that gets adapted into a screenplay we can only hope that the book and those that have read it will be satisfied by what is done. It’s been common to see that the book either gets ripped apart and then picked at in order to make a movie or disregarded entirely. Hopefully Norton will stay true to the source and make it into something that people can really enjoy.

2. It’s set in New York in 1954.

This means everything is going to be old school, old style, and far more gritty and grainy almost in how it feels. Films that take this direction usually feel this way even with the latest filming techniques. It’s almost as if the past just doesn’t want to come into full focus sometimes.

1. The lead character has Tourette Syndrome.

Thankfully this is bound to be accurate enough so long as Norton portrays it well, and he should be able to. Tourette’s Syndrome was first diagnosed in the late 1900’s, around 1885, so obviously that will check out. Now all we have to wait and see is if Norton is able to play the role accurately. Given what he’s done so far it shouldn’t be a big concern.

This is already sounding like an interesting movie.
