How Robert Siegel Changed Public Radio as We Know It

There are a lot of people out there who will be familiar with Robert Siegel’s voice even if they are not so familiar with his face. After all, he was one of the most prominent voices that could be found on the radio. In part, this was because Siegel was one of the co-hosts of All Things Considered, which is one of the leading radio programs for NPR. However, it should also be noted that Siegel became the co-host of said radio show in 1987, meaning that he served three decades in that particular role. Combined, it is no wonder that Siegel’s voice is familiar to a lot of people out there, though unfortunately, that has come to a close with his recent announcement that he would be leaving the radio show.

How Has Robert Siegel Influenced Radio Listeners?

For those who are familiar with NPR’s radio programs, All Things Considered is the single most important news program to be found on that particular station. In fact, it was the first news program to start up on that particular station, seeing as how it was first broadcast in 1971. At that time, All Things Considered started up in the afternoon rather than in the morning because a lot of NPR’s affiliates did not start broadcasting until either the middle of the morning or even sometime later, meaning that it was not until those affiliates had expanded their broadcasting schedules that the radio show started broadcasting in the morning as well. Something that happened in 1979.

Nowadays, All Things Considered reaches around 12 million listeners on a regular basis through more than 500 radio stations. For comparison purposes, this makes it one of the most popular radio shows in the United States, beaten out by no more than two other radio shows. Furthermore, it should be noted that All Things Considered is broadcast in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening, meaning that it is a constant presence providing interested individuals with a mix of the news, analyses of the news, commentaries on the news, and even interviews to provide increased context for the news.

Seeing as how Siegel became a co-host on All Things Considered in 1987, it is no exaggeration to say that he has been an enormous part of its success over the years and years since it started up. In turn, this means that he has influenced a lot of people out there by being the person who informed them about the latest happenings in not just the United States but also in other countries situated all around the world. As a result, he helped to shape their opinions about a wide range of occurrences by informing them as well as entertaining them, thus making himself an integral part of their recollections of said occurrences. Summed up, it is clear that there are a lot of people who are going to miss Siegel’s presence on All Things Considered now that he is gone, not least because he has become such a familiar figure for some that his absence is now being felt almost as though it is almost something physical in nature.
