There are a lot of reasons why The Bachelor needs to end after this current season, but there are five that come readily to mind. The show debuted in 2002 and it was an instant hit with a lot of people who believed in the premise and could get behind it fairly easily. But over the years the show has become more extravagant and less honest in its display and portrayal of love that it touts so easily to the public. People have stopped believing in it quite so much and have instead started looking elsewhere for their reality TV fix since The Bachelor has been headed downhill for a while now. What was once a charming show about two people finally meeting and falling in love is now more like a reality game show in which the contestants do little more than snipe at each other and connive to get what they want.
It’s almost like watching the Jerry Springer show at times, but without the circus feel to it.
5. It has unreal expectations.
The women that are brought to the house are put through a screening process that basically sorts them into the types that the bachelor would find appealing, meaning that it profiles people horribly. Just because someone is thin, in shape, and beautiful doesn’t mean they’d be worthy of the show, but those seem to be big list items when looking for contestants. Like it or not, personality isn’t the top item when it comes to picking out a contestant.
4. The cast is hard to buy into.
They might all be good looking but there are a few of them that are just flat out dull and not even worth filming. Their looks might have got them on the show and being somewhat interesting probably helped but apart from an interesting life and a beautiful face and body a lot of the contestants have been glory hounds that couldn’t act their way out of a wet paper bag. It’s hard to root for, or even against, people that don’t sell the show in some way.
3. The idea has come and gone.
In 2002 this idea was great, it was revolutionary, and it was something that had come along that people found entertaining. 17 years later it’s become something that people really don’t take the time to notice any more and an idea that should have either been revamped or tossed to the side in favor of something new and more exciting or at least entertaining.
2. It’s almost impossible to get to know someone that well in so short a time.
Do you get the fact that these women only get to be with the bachelor for a short amount of time? Even if they manage to steal some screen time with him, which isn’t likely, or somehow steal some off screen time with him, the chances are that they really don’t get to know him that well. It’s very difficult being with someone you don’t know.
1. It’s just time to move on.
The concept is faded, the actors aren’t selling it any longer, and the show has run past its prime. It’s time to just hang it up and move on. Perhaps keep the idea around for a bit of nostalgia later on or a possible reboot, but until that time, drop that last rose and let’s move forward.
Eventually The Bachelorette needs to go too.
