Everyone grew up with a fixation on one superhero or another. With some of us, we were enamored with Superman, and others it was Batman. With me, it was the Black Panther and The Incredible Hulk. Yes, I was a Superman fan and Batman was always on my radar. I even had somewhat of an infinity with Isis and Thor, but I could relate to the Black Panther and the Hulk was unstoppable. I bring these up because we are preparing for the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which will be directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo.
I mentioned Russo because he will have a massive impact on this particular installment will be presented to the public. Everyone has an idea of what attributes a superhero should embody – the ability to fly, swim underwater, superhuman strength, and more. According to Russo, one of the most prevalent attributes of a good superhero is actually their ability to be able to feel pain in someone or another. He believes the vulnerability provides the platform to create inspiration, which is always a vital element of a good movie or story in general.
Joe is teaming up with his brother Anthony for this much anticipated Avengers installment believe that there is a great responsibility to tell more humane stories in cinema today. Russo sees the world in a state of flux in which there are so much chaos and uncertainty that stories that are able to encourage and inspire people will have a more lasting impact. He understands that what he produces with this film has to be entertaining and filled with action and suspense, but he also feels a responsibility to tap into the emotional centers of the audience.
While movies have always been a mechanism of escape, there is no reason that they cannot be a tool of inspiration and empowerment. While a person is trying to get away from a rough week at the office or a struggling marriage, they can be inspired to take on those challenges with the anticipation that they can produce the outcome that they are looking for. This is what Russo is attempting to capture with this movie.
Russo believes that part of storytelling is being able to connect with the audience. While no one in the audience can relate to having the superpowers of the Avengers, they can relate to their sacrifices and struggles. He admits that he is not sure how much of the story the audience will buy into, but he is intent on telling a story that he believes the audience will be able to relate to. That is kind of weird for me because while I love inspirational stories they depict all the challenges, struggles, and pains of the protagonist, I like my superheroes to just show up and kick butt. Sometimes the feeling of invincibility, if only in your mind, serves a great purpose.
There is one thing that is absolutely certain – the Russo brothers are exceptional at what they do and what they bring to the screen in this latest installment of the Avengers should be nothing short of extraordinary.
