I honestly don’t know what to think about a dark “Riverdale” version of Peanuts. Jimmy Fallon is perhaps one of the oddest guys to get into when it comes to comedy but he has managed to become one of the most successful. It might help a person if they’ve ever watched Riverdale to really understand the references, but the Peanuts reference is pretty simple. The only thing is that ‘dark’ never really seemed to go hand in hand with Archie and his gang until Riverdale became a show. Now it seems that the idea to turn Riverdale into a darker version of itself from the comics is what people want. They could be onto something, since the sappy, goody two-shoes act that was given in the comics likely wouldn’t go over too well on TV.
Peanuts on the other hand was rarely if ever dark and as a rule seems to belong well on the other side of dark. It’s interesting enough though to watch, but poor Linus. The Great Pumpkin escapade that was prevalent throughout the entire run of Peanuts every Halloween was something that a lot of kids looked forward to since Peanuts was one of those popular institutions that entertained thousands upon thousands of children that enjoyed the simpler, less complicated cartoons that were a little more down to earth and enjoyed a much more simple look at life.
But killing Linus off? That seems unusually dark, though I can see how it would fit into the motif that was being attempted in this case. I have yet to see an episode of Riverdale but it might be time to take a look after this since I have an itch now that needs to be scratched. I can remember a lot of days spent reading Archie comics and from what I’ve read about the show a lot of that has been kept but the darker aspect of it has definitely become what people like. For instance Archie and Jughead no longer being friends is something new, and Moose being bi-curious is kind of different. Also, the comics never really dealt with a lot of real-life situations, which the show is doing now.
Things do change it would appear and as we grow up and get older we start to understand just how much when our old favorites are dragged back into the present and given a serious updo. Whether it’s an improvement or not I couldn’t really say, but the fact that someone felt it necessary to take Archie Comics and make them into a live show that features the current issues of the modern age is interesting enough to think that it might be worth a watch.
It’s also not a surprise to see Jimmy Fallon take full advantage of this on his show and come up with a way to combine two of the most iconic pop culture comics into one single skit. Having the cast of Riverdale show up at the end was a nice touch too.
