I think at this point that we all know that the Alien franchise kind of needs a new director, and pronto. All respect to Ridley Scott, he’s awesome and he’s proven himself more than once, but it’s time for a fresh start and someone that hasn’t had as much to do with the franchise but could still bring something interesting to the mix. Those listed below have done enough interesting films and work that could be beneficial to the franchise and could possibly make it work again. The metaphorical ship needs to be righted again as it’s been veering too far off course for a while now. There’s a way to tie it all in without a doubt but it needs to happen soon before the interest of the audience continues to drop off in this manner. If someone else isn’t brought in to staunch the bleeding that’s going on then the entire franchise could be defunct in a very short time, relatively speaking.
Here are just a few ideas that might work to bring it back to its former glory.
5. Neill Blomkamp
There’s a reason why I wouldn’t name Blomkamp to the number one prospect, but he would still be a very viable source to go to. A good number of his movies work a lot with robotics, and that could be a boon for the Alien franchise, but it could also be a detractor if the story became too much about the robotics and not enough about the interaction between humans and the creatures. There’s nothing to say it would, but it’s a concern.
4. J.J. Abrams
Abrams has come under harsh criticism for some of his movies but the one thing you can’t deny is that he knows how to infuse a bit of action into just about anything. Even his drama scenes are invigorating and his use of action sequences is good enough that were he to be put on this franchise for even one film he might be able to give it the shot in the arm it really needs.
3. Zack Snyder
Snyder has established that he likes playing with shadows and darkness in his films and honestly that could work out very well for this franchise. The typical Alien story is very dark and doesn’t carry a lot of bright lights that aren’t somehow offset by shadows. The story itself isn’t a bright, happy time no matter what kind of emotions are felt. It’s more or less a dark and very foreboding tale.
2. Darren Aronofsky
Twisted is the term I would use for Aronofsky’s films and that alone would fit the Alien franchise beautifully. I put Aronofsky so far ahead of Blomkamp because he gets the essence of a good twist and knows how to demonstrate the kind of storytelling that makes you do a double-take as you try to figure out just what you missed nearly thirty minutes or more in the past.
1. Guillermo Del Toro
This should be an obvious choice and after finishing his sabbatical maybe Del Toro would actually consider taking on an Alien movie just to see if he could bring his own unique brand of mystique and horror to the franchise. It’s not the typical fare that he’d be used to but it would be something entertaining and altogether interesting to watch since Del Toro is known for his visuals and intriguingly dark stories.
It’s time for a change.
