Given the name, it should come as no surprise to learn that Ocean’s 8 is the follow-up to the Ocean’s Trilogy from 2001 to 2007, which in turn, started out as a remake of the 1960 version of Ocean’s Eleven. Like its predecessors, it will be a heist movie, but it should be noted that it will stand out in that it will be featuring an all-female crew.
For some time, the people behind the Ocean’s Trilogy have stated that the chances of a follow-up to the Ocean’s Trilogy were low. In part, this was because George Clooney believed that Ocean’s Thirteen was a strong ending for the Ocean’s Trilogy, meaning that he was concerned about the potential for a follow-up to disappoint. However, it should be noted that one of the main cast members Bernie Mac died in 2008, which posed an even bigger problem for a follow-up to the Ocean’s Trilogy.
Still, the people behind the Ocean’s Trilogy seemed to have persevered. As a result, a proposal was made for a spin-off of the Ocean’s Trilogy, which would be centered around a character named Debbie Ocean, who would be the estranged sister of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean. Furthermore, the spin-off would be featuring an all-female crew, which is an effort to meet the interest in seeing more focus on female characters in film from more and more moviegoers in modern times. Sandra Bullock is the actress who will be playing Debbie Ocean, while the members of her crew will be played by actresses that range from Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway to Mindy Kaling and Rihanna.
Story-wise, a fair amount of information has been revealed in this regard as well. In short, Debbie Ocean and her crew will be robbing her ex, who will be played by Damian Lewis. Furthermore, the heist will be happening at the Met Gala, which is a narrative choice that will let the movie cram in a lot of cameos from a lot of people.
Finally, it is worth noting that a lot of the people who worked on the Ocean’s Trilogy will be working on Ocean’s 8 as well. For example, both George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh will be involved with the project as two of its three producers. Likewise, it has been announced that Matt Damon will be reprising his role as Linus Caldwell from the Ocean’s Trilogy, thus providing the spin-off with an increased sense of continuity. As a result, while Ocean’s 8 won’t be the same as its predecessors, it does promise to be more than a little bit familiar for those who are interested.
With that said, there is still a fair amount of time until Ocean’s 8 is released in the movie theaters, seeing as how its release is scheduled for June of 2018. As a result, it will be interesting to see how it will handle the problems that can and have popped up. One example is a recent petition to remove Matt Damon’s cameo from Ocean’s 8 because of a comment that was regarded as being insensitive in light of what has been happening with Harvey Weinstein and others. So far, the petition has received more than its initial goal of 20,000 signatures, but it remains to be seen what will come of it.
