The manner in which Kylo Ren reacts to and reviews to The Last Jedi is kind of funny since it sounds like something that Kylo might actually say. The arrogance and self-gratification that come with the character is kind of amusing since he’s a hot-tempered individual that thinks things should go the way he want and that people could just conform to his idea of what’s necessary. That’s why he could possibly become one of the most deluded but somehow most intriguing leaders that has come along in some time. The character is the kind of leader that might send the First Order to ruin but he’s also the kind that if he slows down and thinks about what he’s doing he might become insanely dangerous.
There are Last Jedi spoilers coming, so beware.
Aside from this strange rant that has a point but is more spoof in nature than anything, The Last Jedi raises a lot of questions but it’s still something different enough that it’s taken the story in a different direction. The storm of criticisms and even a petition to take this film out of the official canon have been laughingly thrown about since the release of The Last Jedi. People, whether they are fans or not, have voiced their displeasure with the film in such a way that it’s reminiscent of what happened during The Empire Strikes Back. Anyone remember how that went? People didn’t like it at all since it went so far outside the box that it didn’t conform to what they wanted to happen or what they thought should have happened. And yet years later many of those same people ended up stating that it was the best film of the original trilogy.
There were high expectations coming into this film but nothing like what was felt right after the movie had been seen. People were livid with the director and the franchise itself for daring to bring up anything too different and leaving so many questions unanswered. The short memory span of the fans is something that makes a lot of us who are also fans but can adapt and evolve simply shake our heads as we try to wonder just when it was that people stopped being able to enjoy a story and worry so much about every last technical detail. Those little details do tend to add up and make the story what it is but upon dissecting them many might find that they stop loving the films the way they thought they did.
So Rey’s parents were junkies that sold her off, big deal. So Luke wanted nothing to do with the Jedi Order any longer, big deal. So Rey is just exceptionally powerful, we still don’t know who Finn’s parents were, there’s an unexpected romance between Finn and Rose, and Kylo is now the Supreme Leader after killing Snoke and working with Rey to kill the Imperial Guards.
SO WHAT? It moved the story ahead, and that’s the point.
And the issue between Kylo and Luke? It was a moment of weakness that almost gripped Luke, but one that he couldn’t go through with, and it haunted him from that moment on. Kylo/Ben saw what he wanted to see, and that was what drove him to become what he was.
The next film ought to be just as interesting.
