What We Know about Action Comedy “Stuber” So Far

What do you get when you combine the name Stu with the profession of being an Uber driver? You get “Stuber” which is the name of the upcoming action comedy film for 20th Century Fox. In a recent announcement, we learned that actor Dave Bautista will star in the new flick. It may be an odd name for a new film, but we think it could be a portend of what’s to come. Here’s what we know so far.

Bautista’s contributions

Dave Bautista, who is mot recently known for his role in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Blade Runner 2049,” is trying something a little different in a new movie. He’ll take the lead as a detective on a mission, when he meets the namesake of the title. In hot pursuit, Bautista’s character commandeers the vehicle of an Uber driver named Stu. It leads the two on an action packed adventure and we’re told that the project will feature an ongoing progression of chaotic situations, hi jinks and even a little mayhem.

Inspiration for the film

We’re told that “Stuber” is the brainchild of Tripper Clancy, well-known writer, who joined with Jake Wagner, his manager, along with John Francis Daily and Jonathan Goldstein to flesh out the idea and give it a workable form. Wagner will be the executive producer of the show with Daley and Goldstein as producers and Jeremy Kramer will oversee the studio end of production. We’re seeing a few hints of pop culture infusions with the Uber based theme, and an iconic WWE wrestler in the lead. Michael Dowse will direct the actors, most of whom have yet to be named.

Timelines

We know that Bautista has got his plate full with his reprisal of the Drax the Destroyer role in the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War” sequel which hasn’t even been officially titled as of this time. He has a number of other projects coming up and from all indications we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Bautista in the near future. The action comedy film was picked up by 20th Century Fox last year, and this is the first that we’re hearing about it as a serious project. They’re being tight lipped about who will join Bautista in the cast. We can only assume that the casting crew is busy scouting for the co-stars who will appear in the new project with him.

Hurry up and wait

As of now, we haven’t heard any more about when the cast will be assembled, nor when the cameras will begin rolling. If Bautista’s schedule is any indication, it could be a year or so before serious work on the film begins. Currently, it’s not showing up as a confirmed project, other than the fact that he’s officially signed on with the recent release from the producers. Dave Bautista has six projects in the pipeline including “Hotel Artemis” in post-production; “Escape Plan 3: Devil’s Station” currently filming; “Final Score” in post-production; IP Man: Cheung Tin Chi,” currently filming;”Avengers: Infinity War” in post-production and “Escape Plan 2: Hades” which is also in its post-production stage.
