When ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ was released in 2015, it predominantly used characters that were already known to fans of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, although it did introduce a few new characters. With the sequel to this movie, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, about to be released, there is much speculation amongst fans with regards to whether to expect new characters in this film. Although the producers are keeping many of the details of the film a secret, there has been some news in relation to the characters.
Many of the heroes and villains from the 2015 film are returning, much to the delight of fans, but there are also three brand new characters who will appear in the film. These are Rose Tico, Amilyn Holdo, and DJ. Here is what we know about these three new characters so far. Director Rian Johnson has already revealed that his favorite of the new characters I Rose Tico. She is a mechanic and maintenance worker for the Resistance. Her sister, Paige, is a pilot. While the job of a pilot may seem more exciting than a mechanic, it is definitely Rose that has the most important role and is most relevant to the narrative of the film.
This character is played by Kelly Marie Tran. This is probably her biggest role to date as she has only had small roles in films and television series prior to this. Some of the short films in which she has appeared include ‘The Rising Cost of Cosmetics’, ‘Impressions’, ‘Discount Fitness’, and ‘XOXO’. The second new character is Vice Admiral Amilyn Holda. This character first appeared in the novel ‘Leia, Princess of Alderaan’ but this is the first time she has appeared in a film. She is a member of the Apprentice Legislature and is a friend of Princess Leia. She is now a Vice Admiral in the Resistance. Holda is supposed to be an ally in the film. However, there is also a rumor that she does not have a good relationship with Poe Dameron.
Laura Dern is taking on the role of Vice Admiral Amilyn Holda. She has been nominated for Academy Awards for her roles in ‘Wild’ and ‘Rambling Rose’. Some of her other films include ‘’Mask’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Blue Velvet’, ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, ‘’October Sky’, ‘Citizen Ruth’, ‘Smooth Talk’, and ‘The Master’.
The third and final new character that has been revealed is actually an unnamed character who is referred to by the director as ‘DJ’, although it is not clear whether this will actually be his name in the film. He is a slicer, which is a computer hacker, and his services are used by Rose and Finn. There are hints that he will not be the most trustworthy character. It is possible that there is more to this character than initially meets the eye as it seems there is a lot of secrecy about him.
‘DJ is played by Benicio del Toro. This award-winning Puerto Rican actor has starred in many films. Some of his best-known performances are in films including ‘Snatch’, ‘Sin City’, ‘Che’, and ‘Sicario’. He also portrays the Collector in the Marvel Comic Universe films.
