Suspiria was an Italian horror movie that came out in the late 1970s. Given its name, it should come as no surprise to learn that it was based on Suspiria de Profundis, which was a collection of short essays written by an English essayist named Thomas De Quincey in 1845. Regardless, it is interesting to note that Suspiria was both a critical and a commercial success, with the result that it has become a cult classic that continues to exert influence over the horror movies of the present.
For those who are unfamiliar with Suspiria, it is focused on an American ballet student named Suzy Bannion who going to start attending a German ballet school called Tanz Dance Academy. There, she discovers that the school is not what she had been led to expect, with the result that she comes close to being killed by something supernatural but manages to survive in the end. Curiously, while the exact nature of the monster that showed up in Suspiria is not an uncommon one for horror movies, its weaknesses are rather unusual, being more reminiscent of certain interpretations of the vampire. Regardless, Suspiria has managed to stand the test of time, which is why there is a remake that is expected to be released in the not so distant future.
What Can We Expect from the Suspiria Remake?
With that said, it should be mentioned that remake might not be the best descriptor for the upcoming movie. At one point, one of the cast members stated that it would not be a remake of the first Suspiria so much as something inspired by that movie’s narrative, meaning that it will not proceed through the same plotlines as its predecessor but instead strike out on its own. Said response seemed to have been an attempt to soothe fans of the first Suspiria movie who were confused by why it was even been remade, meaning that under the circumstances, one cannot help but feel skeptical. Certainly, what has been said could be true, but at the same time, there can be no doubt that it was said in light of the fact that the cast and crew needed to soothe the people who make up their probable audience.
Regardless, we have a fair amount of information that has been revealed to us. For example, we know that the new Suspiria movie will still be focused on an American dance student who encounters something unexpected at a dance school. However, this time, the lead character will be played by Dakota Johnson rather than Jessica Harper, though it is interesting to note that the latter will be making an appearance in the movie as another character. Furthermore, we know that the new Suspiria movie has finished filming, meaning that it should be able to be released in 2018 with no problems whatsoever.
However, the most important piece of information might be the fact that the new Suspiria movie has been entrusted to a man named Luca Guadagnino, who has been making a reputation for himself through a number of successes at the film festivals. Combined with a fondness for the first Suspiria movie, an ability to change the on-screen tone in an instant, and a cast and crew that has worked with him on previous occasions, it is not unreasonable to think that he could make something worth watching, though without knowing more, that is still far from being guaranteed.
