“South Park: The Fractured But Whole‬” Controversial Racial Level Setting

“South Park” creators are known for their irreverent scenes and social satire that keeps us hanging off of the edges of our seats. Most episodes contain at least some content that could blow the doors off of political correctness, but there are moments when it comes full circle and if you hang with it, you’ll get what they’re really trying to say. It’s not a show you can watch for just a few minutes here and there if you really want to understand the messages that they’re throwing out.

The new “South Park” video game

The new video game that they’ve produced mimics the show. “South Park: The Fractured But Whole” is their new game that comes with a difficulty setting that becomes a monster when you decide that you want an avatar that has darker skin. The pros at Eurogamer were kind enough to give a walk through of the game. It’s narrated by Eric Cartman so expect to hear him sound off when you go to make the manipulations on the settings. There is no cause for alarm though, this won’t affect the game play at all. The game was developed at Ubisoft and the settings are controlled with a sliding bar that has an effect on how much money your character gets as well as the manner in which other characters will talk to you.

Social commentary is alive and well

This latest game put out by the creators of “South Park” have added a choice of gender. Previously, your character had to be male. You can play either sex. Be prepared if you choose a female though. When you have to interact with Mr. Mackey, he won’t be very comfortable with you. It could make the game a little longer as he needs to make a phone call to your parents. At some point he’ll make a reference to The Stick of Truth and will comment, “So the whole King and Stick of Truth thing, she was actually a girl the entire time?” If you really want to have some fun with your character, you can choose the transgender or cisgender option and you’ll get a whole other response from the school counselor.

From what we gather, the darker the skin of your character, the harder it’s going to be to get money and the other characters won’t treat you as well as if you were lighter skinned. being a girl will make it harder as will any deviation from the traditional male character.

Keeping with traditions

The flavor of the game doesn’t deviate from the ambiance of the show one little bit. You will find out when you play and fiddle with the settings. If you have a firm handle on the intent of the show, then you should be fine, but if you’re not up on the whole social satire thing, it’s a good idea to get in the know. While it may not be the ideal game for people who are easily offended, or who don’t get satire, it’s ideal for video gamers who are fans of the show.
