The first thought you might have is that the artist is just bored. The second would be to abolish that first thought on the ground that simple boredom doesn’t fully explain the intricacy and detail that comes with this kind of art. Creating Game of Thrones sculptures out of pencil lead is not something you do just because you have a few minutes. This is something that can be deemed a calling and true works of art. Now displaying them could take many forms, but one thing is for certain, you don’t want to write with them.
The artist goes into detail on their site explaining how they go about shaping and then carving the sculptures with a regular old craft knife. You know what a craft knife is? It’s basically an X-acto knife as you might use in an art class or in certain office settings. The artist uses this and different magnifying lenses to be sure of the small, tiny, excruciatingly intricate details.
Just take the time to imagine how long it takes to carve out each little scale, the teeth, and every last little detail that you can see in this thing. You can well enough imagine it takes a steady hand and very skillful mind.
One thing I do tend to wonder is if the artist is going off of a template that is nearby or if they are going by memory. The former would seem more likely simply because of the detail but there are artists that can do such things by memory alone, and that is quite impressive.
Every little detail is accounted for, even the scrollwork around the inside of the ring on the Hand of the King’s emblem. It would be interesting to know just how long this took the artist and how many pencils they had to go through in order to get it right.
The other sculptures are great but this one is simply mind-bending when you think of how long the artist had to work at the dimensions. They had to carve away a good hunk of the lead without causing it to become so unstable that it broke. That is patience and a heaping helping of skill.
Once again I’m astounded at the detail. Look at the formation of the bust around its bottom. The care needed to keep the lead stable enough to support itself is just amazing. And the detail is just astounding.
This would be one of the White Walkers prior to the onset of the war perhaps, since it isn’t wearing armor as of yet. But the look of it is so haunting and so realistic.
This is Ghost obviously, whom we have not seen enough of in recent times. The dire wolf might not be a great boon to Jon Snow just now, but this representation is very well done.
Longclaw, the sword used by Jon Snow and given to him by the Commander of the Night’s Watch long before he died. Every detail is accounted for and it’s just enough to say wow.
I would really love to know where the artist got the inspiration to do something like this, as it isn’t something that just anyone could possibly pick up. You have to have a certain measure of skill, and patience, for something like this.
This is cool. The artist is showing the different stages of the Dire Wolf carving. From this vantage point it looks so simple. Too bad it likely isn’t.
The three-dimensional quality of this is just unbelievable. So many people would give so much just to have half of this skill.
Talk about being detail-oriented. The time and effort it must take for this has to be phenomenal.
When you’re talking about something the size of a pencil tip the impression given is even greater since many people wouldn’t even bother to think of this as possible.
This person is skilled, there is no doubt. I do wonder if they do bigger sculptures however, or if they’ve grown satisfied with this medium.
