In the world of sequels it’s not always possible to top the first movie since, to some, by definition a sequel is inferior. There are a few exceptions to the rule however and Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the most notable. It was an awesome movie, let’s just leave that out there, but it was also a turning point in the franchise that could have killed it or lifted it up. So far the franchise is currently stuck in purgatory. Hopefully it can find that familiar magic and come roaring back.
In the meantime, here’s a few things you might not have known about T2.
10. Robert Patrick wasn’t the first choice for the T-1000.
The director would have liked to have Billy Idol for the role. But Idol was in a motorcycle accident so that kind of ruined that opportunity.
9. Kyle Reese has a deleted scene in T2.
He comes to Sarah in a dream sequence, but it was eventually cut. He was almost cast as the T-1000.
8. Hasta la vista became Sayonara baby in the Spanish-dubbed version.
The line ‘Hasta la vista’ didn’t really have the same impact so they switched it around. Imagine hearing this in the original version.
7. The biker bar scene was filming while the Rodney King beating was occurring.
Supposedly the tragic and unnecessary event was happening just a short ways away while the scene was being filmed.
6. Schwarzenegger had to explain why he was walking around wearing only shorts before the biker bar scene.
When questioned by a passerby why he was walking around in just shorts he answered that it was male stripper night at the bar.
5. Edward Furlong was going through puberty during the shoot.
His voice kept changing so he had to do a lot of dialogue post-production. He was around 13 at the time of shooting so it was a little obvious that he was going through some changes.
4. Sarah Hamilton’s sister Leslie acted as her body double.
Leslie helped out during the playground scene by playing the younger Sarah Conner and in the factory when the T-1000 and Sarah were in the same shot.
3. It seems like T2 and The Abyss take place in the same universe.
When they stop at a gas station to rest the company label on the gas tanks is the same as the fictional fuel company in The Abyss.
2. The movie uses the same minigun seen in Predator.
If that minigun looks familiar it’s because it was used by Jesse Ventura in Predator to great effect. It was a definite advantage in T2.
1. The second movie raked in more in two days than the original ever did.
In two days T2 outdid the original movie. It was actually the highest grossing movie of 1991. It was also the most expensive movie of its time.
Terminator 2 was one of the more iconic movies of the 1990’s and is still remembered fondly to this day. In fact aside from the original it might be the only one in the franchise that’s been universally enjoyed.
