Five Things You Didn’t Know About Drew Powell

Drew Powell is an American actor from the state of Indiana. Over the course of his career, he has appeared in a fair number of movies and TV shows, with examples ranging from Straw Dogs to Malcolm in the Middle. However, he might be most familiar to most people as Butch Gilzean on Gotham, which is a character that has received some attention in recent times because of some surprising revelations.

Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Drew Powell:

Set a Record When He Was Born

When Powell was born, it is interesting to note that he set a record at the local hospital with a birth weight of more than 11 pounds. For reference, the average birth weight for babies of European descent is supposed to be around 7.7 pounds, with 5.5 pounds and 11 pounds serving as the lower and upper limits for what is considered to be the normal range.

Started Acting and Singing At a Young Age

Powell started acting and singing as a child. Eventually, he would continue these pursuits throughout his time at DePauw University, where he did not just major in English Literature but also became a member of a honors program in Media Studies. It is worth noting that Powell did not restrict himself to acting at this time, seeing as how he is also known to have written for a number of campus short movies and TV shows.

Debuted on Malcolm in the Middle

In 2000, Powell got his first role as Cadet Drew, who was one of the minor characters surrounding the oldest Wilkerson brother Francis. Primarily, he was known for being the strongest of the cadets in a physical sense but also the weakest of the cadets in an emotional sense. In total, Powell appeared in 13 episodes over the course of two seasons before his character disappeared from the TV show after Francis had headed out for the state of Alaska.

Met His Wife on Ponderosa

From 2001 to 2002, PAX-TV broadcast Ponderosa, which was supposed to be a prequel to NBC’s long-running western series Bonanza. Ponderosa was supposed to have been set when the Cartwright family had just arrived at their new home at a time when two of the Cartwright brothers were teenagers while the third was still a child. Due to his immense stature, Powell was cast as Eric “Hoss” Cartwright, who was nicknamed thus because he was big and likable. Besides his casting, it is also interesting to note that Powell met his future wife Veronica on the set of Ponderosa where she was working as a make-up artist.

Surprise Supervillain

For some time, Powell has been playing a character named Butch Gilzean on Gotham. Said character was a mob enforcer who was killed by Barbara Kean in the finale of Season 3 for conspiring with Kean’s lover to kill her. However, Gotham threw a curveball at its fans when a short scene revealed that the character’s original name was Cyrus Gold, meaning that Gilzean will be making a return to the TV show as the revenant Solomon Grundy. It remains to be seen how rising from the dead will affect the character, but it seems safe to say that it will do no wonders for his intelligence considering his usual depiction in the comics as well as their spin-offs.
