Dota 2 is the sequel to Defense of the Ancients, which was one of the most famous mods for Blizzard’s Warcraft III. Like its name suggests, it was focused on attacking and defending structures called Ancients, which were situated at opposing corners of the map. However, Defense of the Ancients stood out in that each player controlled a single hero, which had to be strengthened through combat before a successful sweep became possible. As a result, the mod is considered to be one of the main sources of inspiration for multiplayer online battle arena games as a whole.
Given this, it should come as no surprise to learn that Dota 2 is an excellent example of a multiplayer online battle arena game. However, whereas its predecessor was a mod for another game, it is a stand-alone game of its own that was published by Valve Corporation. While Dota 2 incorporates a number of improvements over its predecessor, it has remained true to its spirit in spite of these changes, which is part of the explanation for why it has met with both critical and commercial success.
Why Is Dota 2 So Notable?
In fact, Dota 2 is so successful that it is the single most-played game on Valve Corporation’s Steam, which explains why it has had such a stream of apparel, accessories, and other products meant to capitalize on its popularity. However, the most important consequence of Dota 2‘s popularity is a thriving competitive scene boasting teams competing in leagues and tournaments situated all around the world. Some of which come with prizes in the millions of dollars, thus making Dota 2 the most potentially lucrative of the esports out there.
What Do We Know about the Dota 2 Documentary Series on TBS?
Unsurprisingly, the interest in Dota 2 means that there have been a number of documentaries made about the game over the course of its existence. For example, there was Free to Play, which focused on a trio of professional Defense of the Ancients players as they made the transition to Dota 2. Likewise, there was True Sight, which focused on the process of building a professional team good enough to compete in one of the major Dota 2 championships. Now, there will be a new documentary series on TBS called Road to the International Dota 2 Championships, which as its name states, will be following a number of professional teams as they prepare for said competition. Furthermore, the series will even cover the competition itself, which should come as welcome news to those who are more interested in the game than in the stories of the people who play it on a professional level.
Regardless, the documentary series will consist of four episodes in total, which will be aired on August 4, 11, 18, and 25 of 2017. The general idea is for the documentaries to be accessible to a more mainstream audience while still remaining appealing for Dota 2 fans, which is important because multiplayer online battle arena games tend to be more opaque than other genres for people without much familiarity with them. As a result, it is possible that the documentary series will serve as something of an introduction for people to Dota 2, which in turn, could see TBS broadcasting more Dota 2-focused content in much the same way that it has done for Counter-Strike, Overwatch, and Street Fighter.
