Advertising seems like it’s everywhere and must cost pennies on the dollar for the amount of saturation that it receives in the media. It also seems likely to many that if people want something they’re going to get it because they want it, not because someone told them to. Both counts would be wrong. People are heavily influenced by ads, thereby negating the argument that they are meaningless to consumers. This is how people find out what’s out there, what’s available, and what kind of options they have. Second, advertising costs are through the roof. The average ad can cost well over $300 thousand dollars! And if you want to talk about an ad for something like the Superbowl, then it’s time to add another one or two zeroes to that number.
Ads are expensive, but some companies spend more than you might believe on their advertising. Ready for your jaw to drop?
5. Chrysler
Chrysler didn’t just pay into their advertising budget to make their product look great and sound like a deal. They spent upwards of $1.19 billion to educate the consumers about their upcoming redesigns and the safety regulations as well.
4. L’Oreal
Women want to look beautiful right? The lines of cosmetics and various products have hooked so many women into buying each and every new item that comes out that their advertisements seem to rake in the money all on their own. It doesn’t take much to play to the vanity of a person really, and this company is among one of the best that knows how to do just this. Their advertising budget has climbed to around $1.34 billion throughout the years.
3. Verizon
It’s a hard fight to be the number one wireless service in America right now, and Verizon has been spending money hand over fist for years to make certain that they’re the service that people rely on. Their ads have continually changed to incorporate bigger, better promos and be situated in more high volume TV slots so that they can gain access to the largest number of viewers. At the most recent count they’ve spent around $1.64 billion in advertising and roughly half of that was TV advertisements.
2. General Motors
In order to stimulate it’s business and keep its place atop the automobile industry General Motors has put forth an advertising budget of up to $2.13 billion that is split between TV and online sources that go directly to the consumer. Despite being one of the titans of the automobile industry the amount spent on advertising is more practical than impressive largely because of the various financial difficulties GM has had in the past.
1. Proctor and Gamble
Personal care and cleaning products are always bound to be needed and sought after, so the market for them is huge. Proctor and Gamble have managed to spend upwards of $2.95 billion in advertising that’s gone towards everything from an online presence to magazines to TV. While it might seem odd to advertise in such outdated ways in this day and age the consumers for these products are often seen to enjoy a wide variety of mediums by which they can be exposed to the company’s ads. The more exposure, the better.
So how hard did your jaw drop when you saw the numbers? Personally I’m still picking mine up off the floor.
