When X-Men first came out in 2000 people didn’t know what the hell hit them. You had your die hard fans who knew that studios were onto something special by portraying comic books and their characters on film. On the other you had this completely different kind of movie where those who feared changed were adamantly against it. But even with the commercial success of X-Men and its subsequent sequels and prequels, it wasn’t until 2008 with the release of Iron Man that companies like Marvel made a serious dent into the cinematic world. This is when studios realized that a BILLION dollars could be made with these types of films.
Who knows where we’d be without the work of Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr.? Perhaps we’d be in a much less “saturated” place. At least that’s what Star Wars star Mark Hamill thinks. When asked about how he feels about Superhero movies, Luke Skywalker had this to say:
I don’t know what’s going on with superhero movies. They’re fantastic, but I think we’re reaching a point of oversaturation. So that’s why the story is so important, is that the gimmicks and all that, they can only take you so far. That’s what I want, better stories.
I think a bunch of people would completely agree with this. It’s one thing to make a comic book movie for the sake of profits. It’s another to realize that movie has to be a movie, not just some flashy display of effects and explosions that involve the name of a comic book and character for the purposes of profit. We’re at a point now where the latter is starting to climb a little too much and we need to reel it in, bring back great stories and acting to these films.
It’s one of the reasons people are finding Wonder Woman to be so refreshing.
