Sam Worthington was around well before he hit it big in 2009’s Avatar (he was also in Terminator Salvation that year) but to be 100% honest I never thought he’d amount to much after that movie. Personally I thought his performance was “meh” and that his American accent was absolutely brutal. And I think when he said “oorah” I might have puked. After Avatar Worthington had the kind of attention that people get after doing a Star Wars movie. You get roles simply because of how big you are at the time almost regardless of your talent level.
So Worthington did Clash of the Titans which sucked. The Debt wasn’t good. Man on a Ledge wasn’t anything to write home about. I just assumed that after 2012 that Worthington would disappear and wind up on sitcoms. But something happened to him all along the way. Worthington became a much better actor. He kept picking more serious roles, expanding his repertoire, and fine tuning his craft. He was excellent in Everest, dare I say Oscar Worthy-ish in The Shack, a very formidable captain in Hacksaw Ridge and now he’s busy up until 2024 with the new Avatar films.
The point I’m making is “good for you Sam.” I just hope that Avatar doesn’t define who he is as an actor (even though it has no choice but to). I’d really like to see Worthington in more awesome roles. Anyway, that’s all I got. Just felt like throwing that out there.
