If feels like a distant memory but there was a time when MMA was tiny. There was a time when it wasn’t even really called “MMA.” People used to refer to the sport as UFC which is really just the name of the company that began getting MMA into the mainstream. Credit Dana White for creating a massive empire and sport that’s become a multi billion dollar industry. What he’s done with MMA can really only be described as “genius” and something in the realm of what Vince McMahon has done with the WWE.
There used to be people who said that MMA would never catch up to the other fighting sport that holds so much popularity: boxing. There are still people who say that today pointing to things like Pay Per View sales and that bigger boxers are the bigger draws. While that may be true, the gap between boxing and MMA is considerably smaller than you think and the statistics to prove this might surprise you.
I came across this infographic today that demonstrates that MMA is knocking at the door of boxing’s popularity and it seems to be closer to getting in each day.
