Despite enjoying a wonderful time with Nora, Kevin starts to unravel. In a shocking turn of events, he covers his head with a plastic bag, tapes it, and attempts to suffocate himself. Kevin is still grappling with the aftermath of the events he experienced after the Departure. His inner turmoil remains hidden from his family and friends, as he continues to excel at his job and serve as a pillar of the community. With considerable influence in the town, will Kevin ultimately be consumed by his pain?
3. The Unsettling Comparison of Kevin to Jesus
Matt, the leader of the devoted followers who look up to Kevin, begins to write a gospel that starts with Kevin’s life after Mapleton. The comparisons he makes liken Kevin to Jesus Christ, much to Kevin’s dismay. He expresses his strong dislike for the insinuations, and just before burning the sole copy of the text, he looks skyward along with others, viewing a message regarding the impending anniversary of the Departure.
4. The Heart-Stopping Shootout
When Dean presents his theory about dog evolution, Kevin doesn’t buy into it. As Tommy and Kevin leave the lake protest, Dean attacks them with the intention of killing Kevin. Kevin escapes into the lake, and as Dean pursues him, his gun malfunctions. The tension reaches its peak when Dean holds a rifle on Kevin, seemingly marking the end for our protagonist. However, Tommy appears at the last moment to shoot Dean in the head. This event adds more fuel to the fire, as it seems that Kevin just cannot be killed.
5. A Glimpse into the Future with Nora
The final scenes of the first episode of season 3 take us on a journey to Australia. In a jolting scene, an elderly woman brings carrier pigeons to a woman of the cloth. She asks if the name Kevin means anything to her. She indicates that it doesn’t, and viewers then learn that she is an older Nora. The way this episode ends leaves us puzzled, and we can’t help but wonder if the show is going to jump ahead by several years.
