Scouting in sports is still considered a tangible asset even though statistics, mathematics and machines have essentially taken over the scouting process. While many teams rely on data to pick their players leagues like the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL still like to get a human being out there who can potentially identify other qualities in an athlete that a machine cannot. But like any human endeavor there’s bound to be some human error. In fact it’s these errors that can motivate a player to reach their potential.
To this day you have to wonder if a negative initial scouting report of a now superstar still gets under their skin. We all know that Tom Brady still holds a grudge about where he was selected in the NFL draft as well as the things said about his potential. Speaking of NFL players, a number of star players had the chance to publicly read their scouting reports from when they were just coming into the league. It’s pretty funny to see what was said about them considering just how good they are now.
Watching these NFL stars of today (Drew Brees, Richard Sherman, Brandon Marshall, etc) and yesteryear (Joe Montana) read negative reviews about themselves just goes to show you that most scouts don’t know nearly as much as they think they do:
