Reality TV shows tend to be less real than what their marketing would have us believe. After all, they exist for the sake of bringing in viewers, meaning that most show-makers are more than willing to set the stage in order to achieve the desired results. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that Property Brothers is not as real as it seems.
Here are five reasons that Property Brothers isn’t real:
The Homeowners Are Chosen For Drama
Single homeowners are not chosen for the show. Instead, the show-makers prefer homeowners with some sort of sidekick because potential disagreements make for more dramatic viewing. With that said, the exact nature of the relationship between the homeowner and the sidekick that appear on Property Brothers is not important because the potential for drama matters more than the exact nature of the drama.
Some of the House-Hunting Is Staged
The application for appearing on Property Brothers requires the applicant to list the address of the property that they are interested in. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that most of the homeowners have already made a decision by the time that they appear on the show, meaning that most of the house-hunting shown is actually staged for the benefit of the viewers. This is necessary for the simple reason that the show needs to continue shooting, meaning that the show-makers cannot spare much time for the homeowners to go house-hunting instead of getting started on the real meat of the show.
Some of the Negotiating Is Staged
Given that some of the house-hunting is staged, it is natural that some of the negotiating seen on the show is staged as well. In fact, a significant percentage of the homeowners who appear on Property Brothers have already completed the negotiations for their new properties by the time that they send in their applications, meaning that the negotiating shown on the show is also staged for the benefit of the viewers. With that said, this is far from being universal. In some cases, it seems that Drew is genuinely acting as a real estate agent for the homeowners, particularly when there is a clear succession of offers and counter-offers shown on the screen.
The Renovation Is Limited In Scope
Homeowners have reported excellent results from the renovations. However, it is important to note that the Property Brothers will renovate no more than a small part of the property while leaving the rest for the homeowners themselves, which is unsurprising when one considers how much time it can take for even simple renovations to finish. Supposedly, homeowners can choose between either the kitchen or the bathroom, which are both popular choices for renovation because of how much use they tend to use in most homes.
Mid-Renovation Surprises Are Not So Surprising
The Property Brothers like to make its episodes more exciting by throwing in some sort of surprise partway through the renovation process. However, such things are common for renovators, so much so that the show actually requires a 20 percent contingency fee from hopeful homeowners in case emergencies come up. In other words, the surprises are real but not really unexpected because they are the inevitable consequence of the renovation process.
