The biggest news in the last 24 hours about the Alien franchise wasn’t about Alien: Covenant. Rather it was about the original movie Alien from 1979. As it turns out director Ridley Scott had other plans for the ending. In the actual movie, we all know that Ripley defeats the Xenomorph before returning to a cryo-slumber with the ship’s cat Jones. But Scott wanted things to end on a more sour and bloodier note. “I thought that the alien should come in, and Ripley harpoons it and it makes no difference, so it slams through her mask and rips her head off,” he said.
After that Scott would have cut to a scene of the alien working on the ship’s dashboard which would “mimic Captain Dallas [Tom Skerritt] saying, ‘I’m signing off.’” Apparently an executive at 20th century flipped out when he heard the ending and threatened to fire Scott if the original ending went through.
I personally like that ending but Hollywood is Hollywood. It’s gotta end on a positive note right? Fact is, the “bloody” ending still would have resulted in sequels so it didn’t really matter. It would have been nice to see a superior being like the Xenomorph win, because in reality there’s no chance humans are beating that thing.
Perhaps Scott’s true ending will come to fruition in Alien: Covenant but it’d be nice to see Danny McBride emerge as the movie’s hero. Zero chance that happens but we can all dream right?
