You might remember a post we ran that featured Adam Savage going to the Weta Workshop to see how they made the Thermoptic suit from Ghost in the Shell. Now the Mythbusters star is going even deeper into the complex world of props contained in Ghost in the Shell. Savage visits Weta Workshop to get up close with some of the practical props the effects studio made for the film. Weta Workshop’s Richard Taylor shows Adam the mechanical geisha masks and animatronic puppets his team created, and how Weta Workshop used new fabrication and design technologies to make these props possible. As Screenrant points out:
The attention to detail by the creators is staggering, all the way from molded-in Lucite hair ornaments to tiny fans inside the masks to keep the actors as cool as possible. There’s not much point in making a live-action version of Ghost in the Shell if it’s so CGI’d it looks completely animated, so it’s good to see how much effort was made into creating a more solid world for the characters to inhabit.
While Scarlett Johansson will certainly be the focal point of attention in this movie, the folks at Weta should receive some serious accolades for their efforts in this film. It’s too early to talk Oscars but so far the mechanics behind making this movie look “real” have been stellar.
