Chris Cornell’s Orchestral ‘The Promise’ From Christian Bale Film

For a musician, taking on the task of writing a song for a movie is extremely different than coming up with something for your solo career or your band. This is why you don’t often see rock stars, hip hop artists, country stars, and the like taking on scoring films or writing original songs for films. When asked about what he did for The Promise, Chris Cornell had this to say about writing an original song for the movie:

“There are a couple of really amazing documentaries about the Armenian genocide, and one of them was about the phenomenon that people who had literally minutes to grab what they could from their homes would take photos before anything else — before jewelry even,” he tells Rolling Stone. “I was really moved by that; the idea of what is most important to people in a crucial second.”

Creating a song for a movie involves trying to write lyrics and create a sound that actually caters to the movie and its audience.  It’s a tougher task then simply coming up with a tune and its lyrics.  I think “The Promise” is a fine example of research well done and I wanted to share this song with you going into the weekend.
