We mentioned this yesterday but it’s worth repeating. For five straight weeks now, The Late Show has been leading late night ratings polls. The reason is obvious. Of every late night show host, Stephen Colbert is far and away the most political. People trust Colbert and his views and the show’s views on politics more than any other show. Why? Because Colbert has been a political comedian from the very beginning. His days on The Daily Show were as a political correspondent, and then the Colbert Report was at least 80% political comedy. It looks like those years are paying off because of Mr. Trump’s administration. Would this be happening if Hillary were in office? I doubt it. But the other reigning late night ratings king, Jimmy Fallon, is feeling pressure on his Tonight Show.
“[Fallon] is feeling the pressure. I mean, Stephen Colbert is now beating him in a big way and he has to change his format to keep up because he’s losing viewers,” said a source, adding that Fallon’s getting more political. “They had to figure out a way to get Trump [into his routine] because he’s too weak on Trump, and viewers are going elsewhere. [He’s been] uncomfortable talking about politics, and that’s not what the people want.” (Via)
Also if you’ll recall, many people blamed Fallon for normalizing and going way too easy on Donald Trump (David Letterman among them). People seem to forget it was Jimmy Fallon who teamed up with Tina Fey on Weekend Update on SNL. It might be time for him to reprise his role if he wants to win a ratings war.
