Web of Lies is approaching its 4th season tonight on Investigation Discovery. If you haven’t seen this show then I highly recommend it. While the show’s description is super short as it says, “dangerous online interactions” on the show’s IMDB page, it’s to the point. We’re living in a world where being online carries with it just as many dangers as it does advantages. Surprisingly these types of dangers aren’t really highlighted in shows to the extent they should be.
While “To Catch a Predator” was a huge hit, Web of Lies brings a fresh take on everything. In tonight’s premiere: Single mom Lorianna Parker is excited when she meets popular good-looking Corey Davis online, and filled with hope as their friendship blossoms. But when she goes to meet him in the flesh, her dream date turns into a living nightmare.
What’s truly disturbing about this episode is what Lorianna actually says. “I would text Corey in the morning when I would wake up. I would text Corey while I was putting on make up. I would text Corey while I was at work. I would text Corey while I was eating. I was always texting Corey.” (You can see an exclusive sneak peek of the episode at TV Ruckus where this quote was taken from)
Had Lorianna ever actually met Corey? Of course not. And therein lies the issue of what is plaguing us right now. The attachment to screens seems to be exceeding that of real life attachments and when real life comes, there might be either disappointment or in this case, danger.
While Web of Lies has yet to crack a serious ratings or popularity barrier it’s an awakening show not only to parents whose children engage in dangerous texting with people they don’t know all the time, but also to those who are simply seeking out a relationship, even a platonic one. It’s painful to watch a series like this but I feel as though it’s extremely educational as well.
