It might feel like there’s an abundance of great sports nicknames out there but when you really think about it, there are only so many great players in the history of sports that have been aptly and appropriately nicknamed. Think about it. I’ll give you a perfect example of a nickname in present sports that’s awful. Kristaps Porzingis, budding star for the New York Knicks is nicknamed “The Unicorn.” Now, the name is pretty accurate and came from a quote about Porzingis that Kevin Durant used when describing him. He’s a freak of nature and something that comes along practically never. Sure, Unicorn makes sense. But is that a cool nickname? No, it’s awful. Now you see my point.
In the history of sports there really haven’t been that many “cool” and also “fitting” nicknames. Trust me you’ll be pretty surprised. That’s why when I found this list of 20 athletes and read their nicknames, it not only brought me back on a nostalgic journey to my youth but it also made me appreciate that these are nicknames specifically reserved for the elite. They are names that will never die and names that should only come around once in a generation.
Here are 20 of the best nicknames in sports history.
