For those who are big fans of video games and the movie Apocalypse Now, you should be delighted to know that an Apocalypse Now video game is officially in the works. While you’ll have to wait a while for it to be released (2020), there’s still some pretty awesome information out there. Currently there’s a Kickstarter Campaign out there that’s going to support development of the game. In fact, the campaign even has a personal message from original director of Apocalypse Now director Francis Ford Coppola himself:
“Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come”, wrote Coppola. “Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of Apocalypse Now, where you are Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War. I’ve been watching videogames grow into a meaningful way to tell stories, and I’m excited to explore the possibilities for Apocalypse Now for a new platform and a new generation.”
According to a press release for the project, players “will have the ability to make their own decisions independent of the original narrative. As players navigate the unspeakable horrors of the Vietnam War, their reactions to each situation will result in consequences that will alter their journey as the story unfolds. Every decision matters, and each player will tell their own story.”
While games about war are nothing new having an Apocalypse Now stamp on a game can do nothing but increase both its viability and popularity. The original film is widely considered to be one of the best if not the best war movies of all-time. Taking on this project is clearly risky for video game developers but if done right could be a huge home run. Only time will tell.
According to IGN: The Coppola family’s film studio American Zoetrope will join forces with “entertainment and games industry veterans” to develop a psychological horror RPG around the 1979 movie. Said veterans include Rob Auten (Gears of War, Battlefield), Lawrence Liberty ( Fallout: New Vegas, The Witcher) , Montgomery Markland ( Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera) and in an advisory capacity, Obsidian Entertainment’s Design Director Josh Sawyer.
