After showing off her accent skills Monday night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke proved that she’s also very good with languages last night on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Well, actually, I should say that Clarke is at least very fluent in one specific language: Dothraki.
While Clarke was on Late Night to promote her new film, Me Before You, which hits theaters next Friday, June 3, her and Meyer’s conversation also covered Game of Thrones, of course. The HBO fantasy drama is currently in the middle of its sixth season, and throughout Season 6’s first five episodes, we’ve seen Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen, speaking in the Dothraki language quite a bit. With so much of the dialogue in Dany’s storyline being spoken in Dothraki, it made Meyers wonder whether the language was actually something real that they had created for Game of Thrones or if they were just making up words as they went along.
“Well, that’s a good question,” Clarke said. “Cause it’s a language. It’s a full language, and you can study it.”
Clarke then described the process of learning Dothraki ahead of filming episodes of Game of Thrones, as she not only has to read her lines from the script in both English and Dothraki but then has to constantly listen to an audio recording of the words and repeat them before shooting her scenes. It’s a hard language to perfect, and Clarke admitted that she may or may not have flubbed up lines here or there throughout the show’s run.
However, the best time that she ever had with the Dothraki language was when she used it to sing Hanson’s “MMMBop” to a fellow actor during a long day of shooting. As she told Meyers, they were goofing off, and she didn’t realize that they were on camera at the time, which is what led to her recreation of the famous ’90s pop song. Fortunately, she remembered how the Dothraki version of “MMMBop” goes, and she sang a little bit of it during her interview with Meyers. It’s pretty wonderful.
