Stephen Colbert and Kate Beckinsale Reveal Unknown Jane Austen Novels on The Late Show

Stephen Colbert

Hollywood has been adapting classic Jane Austen novels for the big screen for years, but as Stephen Colbert learned last night when Kate Beckinsale came on The Late Show to discuss her upcoming film, Love & Friendship, there are still some Austen stories that the general public has never heard of. For example, Love & Friendship is actually based on an unfinished novella by Jane Austen titled Lady Susan.

When Colbert admitted to Beckinsale that he had never head of Lady Susan before, she explained how there are still countless works written by Austen that haven’t yet been adapted to film or that people don’t know about period. That’s why she decided to bring some of those unknown novels with her, and she and Colbert showed them to the audience.

Some of the more memorable titles included Sense and Sensibility 2: Locked and LoadedSex and Flexibility, and Fast and Furious (Dom Toretto always talking about family now makes so much more sense). However, my favorite moment had to be when Beckinsale read aloud the name for Leather and Lathering, leading to a very funny exchange between her and Colbert when he commented on her English accent.
