Marvel fans have watched Chris Evans fully embody the character of Captain America over the past few years, but as the Civil War star explained last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he almost didn’t take the role. During his interview with Kimmel, Evans admitted that he initially turned down the role of Steve Rogers, a character that he’s now played in five different films (if you include Civil War, which hits theaters next month), multiple times before finally agreeing to become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So what made Evans so hesitant to say yes?
“At first, it was some nine-picture contract, and you know, there are parts of me that have a little bit of social anxiety with this industry,” Evans told Kimmel. “Doing movies one at a time, if all of a sudden you decide you don’t want to do them anymore, you’re afforded the opportunity to step back and re-calibrate. When you have a giant contract, and all of a sudden you’re not responding well, too bad. You gotta suit up again. That was scary.”
Evans openly stated that he rejected the role of Captain America out of fear. However, when he realized that was the case, after speaking with his family and friends, he was finally able to conquer all of his reluctance and worry, and he chose to “push himself into” what he was afraid of instead of running away from it.
“So you are a hero in real life as well is what you’re telling us?” Kimmel said.
“Basically, I’m a hero,” Evans joked.
