Last week’s episode of ABC’s The Family had some intense action, not the least of which was the ending. Hank Asher (Andrew McCarthy) – the pedophile wrongly accused of killing young Adam Warren (Maxwell James) – was found beaten with a baseball bat in his own home! He was either unconscious or dead, because there was blood pooling around his head (among other places).
SPOILER ALERT!!! If you couldn’t tell from the title, this is a major spoiler coming up for The Family Season 1 episode 5!

Whoa! Hank is saying that it’s John Warren (Rupert Graves) that beat the crap out of him! Should we believe him or not? The set up last week certainly makes that seem plausible, but, things being what they are on this show, he could be lying. (If you missed last week’s episode you can catch up with this review: The Family, Season 1 Episode 4: This is the Most Twisted One Yet!)
I also wonder if Hank knows John and Detective Nina Meyer (Margot Bingham) were having an affair? His tone sounds as though he might have….
What else is happening this Easter Sunday on The Family? According to the press release, quite a lot!
The Family Season 1 episode 5 Press Release
The Family: I Win (3/27)
A MEMBER OF THE WARREN FAMILY FINDS THEMSELVES IN TROUBLE
WITH THE LAW WHILE THE POCK-MARKED MAN DISCOVERS A WAY TO GET CLOSER TO ADAM, ON AN ALL-NEW EPISODE OF ABC’S “THE FAMILY”Grant Show, Judith Ivey and Tony Award-Winner Jessie Mueller Guest Star
“I Win” Is Directed by Andrew McCarthy and Airs Sunday, March 27“I Win” —When Hank is badly beaten, he names a member of the Warren family as the prime suspect. Bridey receives the results of the paternity test she ran on Adam, and the answer is shocking and definitive. The pock-marked man begins to send post cards from around the country to Adam, giving Nina and Agent Clements a real shot at catching him. In the past, we see how John’s grief led to his affair with Nina, on “The Family,” SUNDAY, MARCH 27 (9:00-10:00 p.m. EDT).
Hmmm…”The answer is shocking and definitive.” Is that shocking for the audience or for the characters on the show? While most of the Warren family will be shocked if it’s not Adam, what would be shocking for the audience is if this returned guy saying that he’s Adam Warren (Liam James) actually is Adam Warren!
My first thought when reading this release was wondering about whose DNA they’re checking the sample against? Like, is there a DNA sample of Adam’s DNA hanging out in a database somewhere? The answer in reality is that there likely would be. (I looked it up!) That database is, ‘The National Institute of Justice’s National Missing and Unidentified Persons System” (NamUs).
So, what do you think we’re going to learn about “Adam”? Here’s my guess: the match isn’t to Adam Warren, but the DNA matches as a half sibling to Adam Warren. That would be a whole new problem, wouldn’t it?
The Family season 1 episode 5 airs this Sunday, March 27th, at 9pm ET on ABC. I’ll definitely be watching!
